Notice of rent increase.

Can anyone tell me, how much notice a landlord has to give, of a rent increase? Also does this have to be a written notification or can it just be verbal? I have a short term lease.

when you sign a contract aren't you signing to pay x amount in rent for x months? If so, they can put it up at the end of x months, when you renew the contract
If this is a residential "Assured Shorthold Tenancy" then the rent can be increased every 12 months using a 'section 13' notice. The description is here http://www.statutelaw...d=826903&filesize=357

Ok, so simply informing me on the phone isn't good enough? This happened last year as well only I agreed and paid the increase. Although on my contract is still said the old rent.
Have I been a bit of a mug here?
You've not been a mug - UK tenancy law is not simple. Although a s13 is the correct and only legally enforceable way to increase the rent, if your landlord choses another way to advise you, and you don't pay-up, you will find yourself with an s21 notice requiring possession very soon. May not be fair - but that's the real world!
