Can anyone suggest where to go for advice on a starting a compensation claim and how much compensation is likely to be awarded? The claim will be against the police, social services or health service depending on where blame is finally apportioned following an ongoing police investigation. Really don't want to go to any cheesy "had an accident" firms and would prefer independent advice to let us know where we stand. Is there a .org offering this sort of advice? I'm afraid this would also be far too much for a CAB, it's not exactly a common, straightforward case.
Thanks McMouse. Will they indicate which solicitors are likely to be experts in this type of claim? I was hoping to find a way of getting a specialist, but independent assessment first. Don't want to wind up with a junior just out of law school looking it up in books. I doubt there is a precedent for this for them to find in the books anyway.
I suppose you could start here. You will know the Law Society is the regulatory body for solicitors, so one assumes this searches for matches against the particular competence areas claimed by the firms. And all firms or individuals are members

No way of answering your question as to how much compensation is likely to be awarded as you've given no detail of the injury or loss for which you need to be compensated.
Contact the Law Society, like buildersmate said, and they'll give you details of local firms dealing with compensation. But to put your mind at rest - any solicitor will offer you "independent advice" in relation to a potential claim.
