Can I find where a convicted person is serving their sentence?
I know of a person who has been convicted of various crimes and now has to serve 12 months in prison. Am I able to find out where that person is serving their sentence? I know the full name of the person (and it's not a common name). Is it free to find out, as part of the freedom of information act? Please help. Many thanks.

The location of a prisoner can only be revealed with their consent but the Prisoner Location Service can help friends and relatives make contact with a prisoner:

The Prison service does not release the details of where any particular prisoner is serving a sentence , something to do with the Human rights act.
If you know the full name of the prisoner (even easier if you know the prison number, the prisoners personal number not the prison itself ) You can send a letter to the prison service and they will pass it on. Be warned , no prisoner has to reveal where they are being held, again, part of the Human rights act.
As soon as a person is sent to jail they are allocated a Prison number, this never changes, the prisoner could be released and not go back into jail for another 50 years but they will have the same prison number as soon as they go back inside.
