In what circumstances do you have to tick the box on an application form where it askes you about previous convictions? For example doe it apply to a suspended sentence that hasn't been activatedand does it apply to fines?

If for example you got a job and your employer later found out about the convictions you could be liable for a charge of deception.
Depending on the type of job your prospective employer may ask for a CRB check in which case all your convictions would be revealed
