There may be restrictions on who they see and where they go. For instance, they are not permitted to enter licensed premises, or make contact with previous victims. Most day release is for the purpose of maintaining family contact, attending education courses and interviews, or for working as a preparation for release, and these licenses can be quite specific about what can and cannot be done. The vast majority or issued to prisoners at open (low Security) prisons. Lifers start by having escorted absences, where a prison officer will accompany them on the first few outings, to gauge their responses.
