The maximum penalty for ABH, in a magistrates' court is 6 months imprisonment (plus a fine of up to 5000). However, it's an 'either way' offence, which means that the magistrates can refer it up to the Crown court. The maximum penalty is then 5 years imprisonment (plus an unlimited fine).
In practice, the courts try to keep first time offenders out of prison so, if it's your first brush with law, you're probably looking at a community punishment (e.g. 100 to 200 hours unpaid work).
However, if you've appeared before the courts before (particularly in relation to violent offences), you'll probably be facing a prison sentence of between 2 and 6 months (with only half of that time actually spent 'inside').
