Police Caution Can I still qualify as an accountant

Hi

When I was young (15) I recieved a police caution for shop lifting. I'm now 24 & want to go on to qualify as an accountant, is it still possible for me to do so? And what kind of checks are carried out? Will any checks reveal the caution?

my son received a caution and was told it would be on file for 1 year but it didnt mean he had a criminal record however any wrong doing in the future year and the caution would be upgraded but if he kept his nose clean during that year the slate is wiped clean so to speak hope that helps

As far as I am aware accountants do have to be screened by a governing body in a similar way that prospective lawyers do. As a trainee solicitor I have heard many stories about the Law Society refusing applications for what would appear to be fairly innocent mistakes. It is quite clear however that offences involving dishonesty are seriously frowned upon.

I would seriously address this issue before you spend any time and money on accountancy courses. I'm sure you'll be fine though, it was a long time ago. Best of luck becoming an accountant.

A caution will still show up on the CRB check which most professionals are now required to take. It is not as bad as a conviction but still essentially means that you were guilty of an offence so it doesn't make a huge difference.
