I believe that unless a pavement's been given cycle path status, then even children aren't supposed to ride their bikes on them by law.

The official term for a pavement is footway - that should give a huge clue as to whether or not cycles can be legally ridden on them.

Section 72, Highway Act 1835 (as amended):
"If any person shall wilfully ride upon any footpath or causeway by the side of any road made or set apart for the use or accommodation of foot passengers . . .every person so offending in any of the cases aforesaid shall for each and every such offence forfeit and pay any sum not exceeding level 2 on the standard scale (currently = �500)".

illegal if you are an adult or a child who is old enough to have taken their cycling proficency test of course its illegal silly thats why they are called footpaths not bike paths they are for walking only...............

Yes it is illegal, but I ride on the pavement regularly. I am an adult and it is a decision I make because I don't want to be mown down by a lorry or a negligent car driver who thinks that a cyclist is just a pain in the ar$e to be overtaken at all costs. i wouldn't dream of riding a bike through a shopping centre, but on quiet pavements, yes, and I will go on doing it, because a small percentage of motorists have no care nor concern for my life.

yes but why not walk im sick of my daughter having to movbe out of the way on a footpath because some idiot dings their bell and assumes they have right of way if you are not confident to ride on the road walk or take a bus
