I have been in a relationship for nearly 2 years. I know my partner has a criminal past. I have just been told that he was convicted of a crime far more serious than he told me. I really want to check this out before i confront him. Does anyone know how i could find this out? I cant ask him and it will be a real deal breaker if its true

Have you tried googling him? If it was that serious a crime there may be a mention in a local newspaper archive?
May I suggest that you ask him, rather than confront him.
If,asyou say,you have known each other for 2 years, surely a certain amount of trust must exist between you.
If it does,nt then there can only one direction your relationship is heading.

Aren't there "special" cases which allow you to ask the police if someone is on the register? If there are, then this has got to be one of them...

I didnt realise I could get in touch with the police, i did think of the sex offenders register but had no idea how to get to it.......thank you so much for the advice
He wouldn't necessarily be on the sex offenders register for life - it depends on the offence and the sentence - someone is only on the register for life if the sentence is over a certain length (I think it's 30 or 36 months), and then there is a kind of tapering inclusion length of time, and it is also is slightly different again if someone was under 18 when the offence was committed - and this is assuming that any offence happened after 1997 as the register is not retrospective.

It possibly is worth talking to the police, but I don't think that they will tell you anyone (data protection act and confidentiality) and won't confirm if someone is on the list or not.

Do you not know anyone, other than his ex, who has known him for a while - although I understand really not easy to ask subtly!

From what i can establish it would have been pre 1997 so thats that out of the window. Strangely the only person i know from his past is his mother who i know wouldnt tell me. I have tried google and found nothing. I guess i need to bite the bullet and ask him. Thank you to everyone for their help i really do appreciate it
