Custody of a child

Before I see a solicitor I was just after some advice.

My ex partner has a five year old son. Not mine. And she doesn't know who the father is.

She would like me to have custody 'should anything happen to her'

Is this possible, and is there a way of legally making sure this happens.
Many thanks

I am not one of the legal bods on here but I am assuming that if you go through an adoption process and legally adopt the child as your own then you would have legal custody should anything happen to her. I am thinking that would be the easiest way but as I said, I am not one of the legal bods and they may have a better solution for you.
Yes, this can be done. She needs to see a solicitor - I'm not 100% sure if she can "leave" the child to you in her will
you cant have custody...but in a will someone can designate another as nominated guardian of a surviving child...
I knew that used to be the case murraymints, but I wasn't sure if you could still do it.
I was once told Iwas being"left" 2 children in a friends will (about 20 years ago). Thank goodness they are grown up now - they were bloody horrible kids
