Shall I sue the employer that made me redundant only weeks after a temp I trained was given permanent contract?

My employer has just made me and about a third of staff redundant. The need for redundancies was announced only two weeks after a temp I had trained for my old position was given a permanent contract. Can you make new hires and two weeks later tell your staff they will be made redundant?

In a redundancy they have to apply equal criteria to the whole pool of people. The fact that, as you describe a temp was turned into a recent hire to do tasks that you can do could well be a valid argument. Some information to clarify this: http://www.direct.gov...edundancy/DG_10029832

Why was the temp being trained for your position? What did you expect to be doing when training was over?
I'm think that as the temp was given a permanent contract before you were given redundancies, it's all above board and legal

So, simple answer is yes, they can
The employer has to demonstrate that you have been fairly selected for redundancy.

On the limited facts you've given, it appears that you may have been unfairly selected. A solicitor or union rep may be able to advise. Many solicitors will give you a free initial interview.

It's not clear to me whether the person ehtobel2 trained was given ehtobel2's latest job or his/ her previous job role. It's also not clear whether ehtobel2 is being made redundant.
On the face of it, based on what the poster has said, an emplyer can appoint someone two weeks before annnouncing redundancies. Redundancies are often decided on a 'last in first out' basis but not always.
How long had you worked there, ehtobel2?
