Im really annoyed. We put up fencing over 5 years ago between our neighbours garden and ours. We have just employed a handy man to re stain our fence on our side, i have just had a call from the neighbour saying that it is our responsibility to re stain her side too as it states on the deeds that her side of the fence must look better than ours but surely this does not mean we have to pay for her side of the fence painting. Nothing would have been said if we had not decided to re stain out fence. Please help, im shaking with anger.

Thank you all for your replies, it's made me feel a lot better although i am still shaking with anger. Seriously, if you knew what this woman is like........ Over the years we have done all sorts for her as she is on her own but she wont even put our bin out when we are on holiday because she has to lift it up a small step although she has a small identical step in her garden too. Im not the sort of person who expects favours in return so have never held it against her but this fence has just broke the camels back.

if you originally put it with the nice side facing her, i would take it down and turn it round the other way...so she gets her stained side ...and you get the nice side.

the is absolutely NO legal requirement for you to give neighbours the nice side...its a common misconception...cannot understand why its become such an ingrained myth.

no deeds would ever state such a thing and if they did it would not be a legal addition... ignore her!

if i was you, find some piece of law regarding this, print it out and put t through her door...
Your fence your choice.

Mind you I would find a lot of near empty tins (freegle) and paint her side splodges of anything goes:)
Or paint black even :-)
who is the arbiter on this imaginary deed thing of "looking better"? You should paint her side fluorescent pint with green and blue spots and then say "well i think it looks better"
please, please paint her side in a disgusting colour/pattern then tell her it's your fence and in your garden so if she touches it you will sue her a s s off. and then tell her why you did it...i.e. she is a tight, rude, selfish person. enjoy! x

p.s. i'll come round and paint the fence if it means winding her up!

Thanks to you all. She has avoided me all day but i will let you know what happens in the next installment. Love Rosiew
contrary to what others have said, I wouldn't advise painting it pink, hurling abuse, or anything aggressive. Don't start wars with the neighbours is my motto, since you have to live next door to them. Just ignore them when they behave like twonks.
Just ignore her, do not take down the fence you have paid to have put up .Let it ride -- it is not worth even thinking about.
Nonsense! Let it rot on her side for her nerve.
Ignore them .. or paint it pink and yellow stripes. If you don't want to do it .. I'll pop over and do it for free : )
