Seat Belt responsibility

can someone answer the question if i get stopped in my car and the passenger is not wearing a seat belt, who is it that gets in trouble me been the driver or the passenger?

Driver I think....or it could be both. The driver definitely has to make sure that all their passengers are legal.

The driver is responsible for passengers under 14. Those over 14 are responsible for themselves.

However, by driving with adults who aren't wearing seatbelts, you are an accessory to illegal activity...

As Mark said - driver is responsible until they reach 14. However, as a parent 14 is to young to have that responsibility and as it would be the parent paying the fine, kinda seems a moot point

I'm probably going to get accused of racism here but near where I live it is quite common for one particular race/culture to allow small children to sit or stand up in the back of the car instead of wearing seatbelts. As I sit next to them at traffic lights and point to the children and my seatbelt I get puzzled looks back. I don't know if there is a cultural issue here that explains it but I cannot understand how parents can allow this to happen.

Well if go to some of these countries Factor, road safety isn't high on their priority list.

Saying that, it wasn't high on our list when I was a kid.

I have been in this scenario when I was learning to drive! Idiot father wasn't wearing his seatbelt. I got pulled over by the rozzers, he got a rollocking and a fine. Nothing was said to me. However if the passenger is aged 14 or under the driver us responsible.

Seatbelts weren't much bothered about when I was a kid either. My parents regularly had to squeeze 7 kids and 2 dogs in one estate car. We broke down on the motorway once and the police who helped us were not at all bothered about the three kids sitting in the boot.

I used to sit in the back of my Dads works van....with all the tools. He nearly had a crash once and I was hit on the head with a wheel barrow.....lol

That's true EvianBaby.. when i was a little 'un in the late 60s we used to go out a few times a year with my auntie and uncle who were one of the few families we knew who had a car. It was an estate car and we used to get 4 adullts, 7 children and a big dog in there.

I was actually sitting on the wheel of the wheelbarrow. When he slammed his brakes on the handle end flipped over, at quite a speed as well.
