Advice re lost pension.

I worked for a company from 1968 to 1977 and contributed to the pension scheme and the pension should be payable from 2012.
I was made redundant in 1977 and was issued with a letter detailing the amount of pension payable at age 60.
I have contacted the company and trustees of the pension scheme as instructed in the letter and scanned a copy of the letter to the company and trustees.
I have received a response that the company has no record of me working there. I have told them the area and the location I worked in and they have stated they have contacted several people who worked in that location at the time and nobody remembers me.
I have named some of the people I worked with and the company has said they have no contact address for these people but admit they did exist.
They have now asked me to take the original letter into their head office so they can examine it.
As it is a big building I am concerned the letter may be taken from me and not returned.
Where do I go from here?.

Just a thought- you didn't transfer your pension fund over to your new employer in 1977 did you?

No I did not trasfer my pension to my new employer.
I was advised against it by by new and my new pensions officer.
You have just sparked my memory in another respect.
The pensions officer in my last company saw the paperwork around 1977 and he only retired about 5 years ago.
It may be possible for me to find his telephone number out and he may remenber looking at my paperwork as I saw him at least once a week on average.

Martin has a good point - every time I completed a tax return, they have wanted details of contributory pensions. HMRC might be able to help you out - their records will go back that far. However as the others say - you have your letter, don't let it out of your hands.

Well I have moved a stage forward.
The company has found 2 people who remember me and the position I sat in the office. One was the internal post man / messenger. They asked me to name him and I was able to but I can not remember the other person who said he sat about 5 yards from me in the office.
With all the different offices I find it strange the messenger remembered me of all people.
Just a case of locating my pension / employment records.
I have asked what they will do if my records can not be found and they have said something could be done.
