hi, when your photocard licence runs out, does that mean you can drive till it's renewed? I haven't got £20 till next payday, and the licence runs out before then. thanks

I maybe being naive here but I thought a driving licence ran out when you turn 65 or whatever?
See here bednobs, I think it tells you!

Your photocard runs out every 10 years Kat but you're ok to drive bednobs

Photocard driving licences are only valid for up to
10 years. The expiry of the photo on a drivers’ licence does not affect the validity period of the entitlement shown on the licence. You will need to renew the photo on your photocard licence at least every 10 years to keep your photo up to date. We will send you a reminder when your photo is due to be renewed, you may have to pay a fee. After the age of 70, you will have to update your photo once only. This will be when you renew your actual licence. We will send a reminder for this. If you have to renew your licence more regularly (for example, for medical reasons or because you are entitled to drive
You can still drive, it's only the photo that has expired, not the licence, you may be liable for a fine of upto £1000 for having an expired photocard though.
Thank you, McFluff.... I'm quite obviously physically and mentally blonde! Lol
no you were correct Kat ... the 'photo' part runs out NOT the permit! lol!
I think I'm definately experiencing the Friday Feeling lol

bugger, if i can't afford £20 i certainly can't afford £1000
i think you'll be ok to wait till payday, i've had driver not know their photo' cars had expired until i've pointed it out and some were a few months gone
I know a couple of people that renewed late and never got fined, the renewal itself doesn't generate an automatic fine from what I've read.
Question Author
ta, i can probably risk it then!
If you licence has expired then it's expired, surely? That means you can't drive till it's renewed?

It has still expired, regardless of the reason therefore you are driving with no valid licence
Ooops no, it's expired but not undrivable on :)

not sure I'd risk it myself
I don't think I would either - it's a bit late now, but couldn't you have renewed it last payday instead of being in a risky place now...?
Question Author
i could have done, had i realised it needed doing
Why didnt you know about, bednobs? you must have had a reminder?

You can do it on line if your passport is under 5 years old
Question Author
don't have a passport - too expensive to renew!
tell me about it! Only have mine as we went on our jollies a couple of years ago. Can't afford the jollies now tho lol
Well I'm still driving with a paper license so I would risk it.
My mum still has a paper only licence as well, she's go no intention of changing it until she has to.
