My daughter has started work about two month back working 20 hr week...she got her new council tax bill a couple weeks back and was shocked to find she has to pay £69 a month(band A .£900 and a bit annual)
My other daughter does a 16 hrs week and pays £50 and a bit (Band B £1073 annual)
Does anyone know ...about...how much my first daughter would pay if she did a 16 hr wk.

When I was out of working for four months and earning around £68 a week i got no council tax benefit because my wife worked part time, so I assume it's linked to household income and savings. Does anyone else of adult age live in the household and do they have any income? If they live alone there is a single person discount
Question Author
she lives alone with her 11 year old daughter.
Go on to your councils web site as some have a calculator where you fill in your wages and get an estimate of how much you pay. low earners are so getting left behind in the Country. I wrote an example in the Family section about this..

Thank You
She should be getting the single person 25% discount as the child does not count for that. The child will count when working out expenses allowed against income though.
Very good benefits calculator here get both daughters to fill it in

Would appear that my daughter is not benefiting from working,,,in fact she will be worse off!!!!!
perhaps she would be, kloofnek, but pride comes into the matter. Working with very little to show for will only encourage her to get a better, higher paid job? Also, she is the role model for her daughter, leading by example.
A benefit system that means folk is worse off financially when they find work, is a bad system. If benefits just cover essentials, as should be the case, then a 40 hour working week ought to have a minimum wage that also covers the essentials, at the very least. Either the benefit level or the minimum wage might be badly set ? At least your daughter can have the pride of knowing she is helping herself though; unsure how much compensation that is, but .....
And pro rata for 16 hours and partial loss of benefit of course.

She is going to look into it as it is quite possible the local council have got it wrong a,s I know from experience, how in incompetent they are...as is the case with many office workers these days.
when she got her Back to Work Bonus, she was initially thought she had no children and paid her accordingly even though they knew she did have a child through other benefits in the past!!!!
