Are these company phones or private phones?
Have they said why they need them? I can't see any reason why they'd want it. Just say you haven't got one
Unsure about the law but as ff implies, if it is a company phone then they can surely know their own phone IEMIs even if assigned to you. They should have noted them before handing them out. If it is your personal phone I reckon they have no right asking.
Unsure about the argument in that link. All the IMEI does is identify a handset, they still need to clone your SIM, and then it's unlikely the service provider wouldn't spot an issue with 2 identical SIMs on the network.
Maybe it's to put the numbers on Immobilise.com. We have our EMEI numbers stored there. If the police do a stop and search or search a premises they can check the EMEI number of any phones they find to check who is the registered owner. If stolen they will then get the phone back to the owner.
Here's another thread on this subject.
One poster reckons that it could be used maliciously, to "brick" your phone. :-/

There's a post mentioning Brisbane & Sydney and the story there was that the employer only wanted to put the IMEI on the list of the company's assets.

So the response to "give us your IMEIs" should be "can I choose which brand of phone you're going to give me "
