Faced with two possible answers of true or false, I have put true as the answers to the following questions. Am I correct please?

1. Refusing to obtain medical treatment for a sick child is abuse.
2. Giving a child alcohol is abuse.
3. Parental stress can increase levels of child abuse
4. Social Services can apply for a court order for permission to place a child in care.

I would agree on all except number 1. It's debatable whether some who stick to their religious beliefs and refuse medical treatment as abuse. One might emotively describe it as so but I think it can only be an emotive description.

Perhaps not 2 either, would very much depend on amount and purpose. French children introduced to wine at dinner is surely not abuse.

4 Yes they can , but must provide evidence to back up their actions.

agree with Prudie. Religious beliefs aren't the only reason for not taking a child to the doctors; parents might just think the ailment is nothing serious. God help us if we get to a position where people get prosecuted for not taking a child with a cough to their GP.

Ditto the alcohol question. Partly depends how old the child is, I imagine. There's a difference between a 12-year-old having a sip of beer (which I did, with my parents' consent) and pouring gin down a baby's throat to shut him up.

I feel that I want to explain the answers a bit more than just yes or no type answers, but it is for an online safeguarding test. I believe that giving a child alcohol when they are under 5 is child abuse.

1 is abusive (neglect is a form of abuse)
2 depends on age of child and amount of alcohol. Is legal, anyway.
3 debatable. Possibly in some people.

Sorry if I appear to be making light but it maddens me that you are given questions that supposedly require straight answers yet require more - poor teaching in my view.

I quite agree with the thoughts behind the answers being submitted. I am trying to do my best to answer the subject by researching the matter online - not that this is always reliable! Any knowledgeable Social Services/legal personnel able to answer question 4?

These Safeguarding questions have been set by an education provider, would you believe!

1. In my opinion it is abuse usually, the possible exception being in a child who is terminally ill and whose treatment is pointless, painful or distressing and which lessens the quality of life.
2. Giving a child alcohol is not abuse unless it is to excess- we always had wine with meals from a very early age- watered when we were quite little to no ill effect whatsoever.
3. I'm sure it could increase levels of child abuse. I can't imagine many happy abusers, so you have to presume that most people who abuse are tired, stressed, angry and frustrated.
4.Yes I believe they can if they have sufficient concerns.

I have just typed in my answers. There were 15 questions altogether. The test was meant to be based on the child abuse document which had been provided, which was worse than useless, so common sense had to be used in most cases. The results are in............ and the question setters (Safeguarding Team) believe that the giving of alcohol to a child is abuse. Hmmm!
