technically choses in action are tangible and intangible this would be an intangible one ( well you used the phrase first ) and it depends on the contract for membership ( and I would expect them so specify not ) so as we advice about 90% of the time on AB " it depends on what the contract says "

No idea what species of property it is but whether its assignable or not will depend on the T and C's of the gym.

Oh is it assignable even if they say it isnt ?

You are in Unfair contract terms act 1977 territory here and I would expect a judge to say it is NOT unfair ( but that is my opinion )
there might be a provision for buying membership as a gift. Have a look at the fine print.
