Your new licence will be valid from the date your application is approved, not from the expiry date of your current licence, and expires on the tenth anniversary of that approval date. I was unaware of this when I renewed my licence a few years back. I completed and returned the D798 licence renewal form within days of my receiving it - when my new licence arrived...

One month in advance I think.
The new licence will not start until the old one expires, so it's no hurry.
it looks as tho it might be 90 d

https://www.gov.uk/renew-driving-licence-at-70

try now and see what happens - they can only say no ....
PP that link is only for drivers who are 70 or over. The OP is just 62!
As I said the new licence will be dated to start the day after the old one expires so there is no hurry.
it would appear that DVLA send you a form. I found this out because the previous occupant of my house (who moved out in 1986....) clearly never bothered to tell DVLA she'd moved, and her renewal form arrived on the doorstep this week.

silverpic, when you do apply do it online, that's what I did. Applied on a Thursday and the new licence was delivered the next Tuesday morning!

Many thanks to you all for your responses-will follow advice and wait until they remind me and then apply on line.

I was unaware of this when I renewed my licence a few years back. I completed and returned the D798 licence renewal form within days of my receiving it - when my new licence arrived I found that I had lost 36 days from what I had expected to be its expiration date.
* "... expires on the tenth anniversary of that approval date"

Well, usually expires on the tenth anniversary, however you being 62 does mean that your renewed licence will expire earlier on your 70th birthday.
