I am completing forms for my daughter in law who is applying for British citizenship and firstly needs a certificate for permanent residence. The form asks for the name of a 'Sponsor' but I cannot find a definition of that word for this purpose. Can anyone advise me if it has to be her employer or can it be myself or my son? Many thanks.

Is your daughter-in-law a citizen of an EEA country? If so, a sponsor needs to be a relative (with proof of that relationship to be provided). See Section 1.10 here:
https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/505032/EEA_PR__03-16.pdf
and page 3 of the guidance notes here:

If your daughter isn't a citizen of an EEA country, please tell us which form (instead of EEA(PR)) it is that you're filling in, as 'sponsor' might need to be interpreted differently under those circumstances.

Thanks Buenchico. My daughter in law is Hungarian, which is in the EEA. She has worked full time in the UK for over 8 years and has lived with my son for 3/4 years. They married year ago and have since bought their first house on a mortgage. I have the form EEA(PR) and the guidance notes but cannot find a definition of sponsor. I know that when my daughter emigrated to Australia her sponsor had to be an employer. I know the circumstances are very different here but I do want to get it 'right' first time. I thought it would be straight forward but although she is an EEA citizen married to a UK citizen she needs to obtain a permanent residence document before applying for British citizenship. Many thanks for your help.
