Fine For Cigarette End

Hi all

Just wondering, my sister has been given a £75 fine for putting a cigarette butt down a grid in the local park. Is this correct? It wasn't that she put it on the grass or threw it down. She tried to dispose of it responsiblely. Is this £75 fine correct? Just seems excessive.

There is a difference between a fixed penalty and a fine. A fine needs you to be convicted in a magistrates court where a fixed penalty does not. There are fixed penalties for both dog fouling and littering , not just fag ends, the fixed penalty is about to be increased to £150

I don't disagree with being fined for dropping cigarette ends, but in context dog looks far messier, unhealthy,and disgusting.

She needs to learn about what is a responsible way to dispose of her litter.

Following smokers is a great way to ensure that those who are littering get fined. In my observations, most people who smoke in town don't act responsibly. I also noticed that men tend to be open about it while women tend to be sneaky.

Cigarette buts are the majority of the litter where I live, I think it is time that smoking in the CBD was outlawed.

Cigarette butts are not biodegradable and constitute a significant pollution problem. Hiding them down a drain is not a solution.

They also contain poisonous substances.
