Obliged To Give Details To Police
Cab anyone (EDDIE, Buen, NJ etc) clarify for me? Under what circumstance are the public 'obliged' to give their personal details when asked by a PC?
As I understand it, if you are stopped for a motoring offence then you are absolutely obliged to provide details (driving license etc) likewise if you are actually detained/arrested. But, as I understand, if you are stopped randomly, you don't have to give any perssonel details.
Thanks.

A friend of my sons seems to regularly get stopped by the police for nothing more than walking the streets late at night. (he has a few mental health issues and sleep problems and takes to having a late night walk to clear his head, but due to the nature of the area in which he lives...a 'rough' area ...he seems to get stopped a lot and is getting a bit cheesed off.
Thanks for the link, excellent.

Not quite an answer but years ago when I bought my first car. I got stopped every day sometimes more than once. I thought it was just because I was a new driver, never driven before except with the instructor. It was not until weeks later that I found the previous owner of the car was a burglar and they were checking it was not full of 'swag' . I could not understand why all the police ever wanted was to look in the boot!
