Rent Increase

Is there a law which restricts a landlord from applying large rent increases. I am currently paying £1050 per month, and a few days ago, I have received a notice from the agent saying the rent will be going up in December to £1250, that's a 20% increase which I would not have thought was allowable ?

Maggies ruling that councils could use the cash from sale of their housing stock for purposes other than replacing the homes that they sold was the prime reason that councils sold of their entire housing stock to housing associations as mine did . The rules on purchase of housing association houses are much more stringent.
People such as me who were secure tenants of the council before the house was sold to a housing association have a retained right to buy.
This means I can buy my house from the housing association at the same discount that applies to a council house, around £90,000 discount at present. I can also pass on my tenancy to a child or grandchild, so I can pass on a secure tenancy and right to buy to my son.

Why a house for HA tenants when their daily rent is less than the cost of brick or the cost of 5 cigs! Caravans/immobile homes would suffice.

Going off the op but I've said it before council or HA tenets should not be able to pass their tenancy into their children so that the get a home at a hugely discounted price!
Those sorts of homes are supposed to be there to help out those in need, why can't your child do what all other young people do and work hard to save up!!

I have a friend who is in private rented house and her rent goes up every six months. There is little she can do about it because she is a single mother of three with two disabled children. Even though she paid six months rent in advance they jump up and down if the rent is a day late. Even though she keeps them informed about delays due to redundancy etc.

I have another friend who between them earn over £60k a year (way, way more than me and OH earn) and they are in HA three bed house paying a subsidised rent.

Why the hell should My family, who earn less than them, pay for subsidised housing of a family that earns at least a third more zthan we do?
