Parking Ticket After Car Sold To Garage.

May 2017 we part exchanged our car at a dealership near to us. The salesman kept hold of all the documents and said he'd deal with it all .
August 2017 . Car was parked illegally and ticketed . Penalty notice comes through our door.
Turns out the salesman failed to send documents to DVLA.
Garage apologizes nothing more .
March 2018 . DVLA have updated their records to show that we no longer owned the vehicle as from May 2017.
We are now getting letters threatening us with debt collectors and court action.
Where do we stand on this and would Citizens Advice be our next step ?

You certainly need some expert advice, and Citizens Advice is a good place to start. Don't try to sort it out on your own.

Did you send part nine of the V5C registration document to the DVLA?

would they just accept a copy of the receipt for the car?

^ Yes that part is the sellers responsibility . If you did not do it you're going to be held responsible for paying the ticket.

My reply was to ubasses ,but bednobs reply is a good one . I would send a copy of the sales receipt.

Already sent them a copy of sales reciept and DVLA's acknowledgment letter that we did not own the car from May 2017.
The salesman kept hold of all the relevant documents and assured us he would send them off ... but failed to do so.

Unfortunately it was your responsibility to not only send the document off, but to also to ensure you received confirmation from DVLA.
(If you do not notify the DVLA that you have sold/transferred the vehicle, you will continue to be liable for it even though it is no longer in your possession.- quote from Telegraph motoring correspondent)

It is the sellers reponsibility to advise the DVLA of transfer of ownership and, this being the case, I fail to see that you can avoid liability for costs in this instance, because you were still registered as the owner when the car was illegally parked.

A number of Dealerships fail to pass forward documents to the DVLA and the car remains as a secondhand vehicle until the original owner notifies the DVLA of Change of Ownership. Meanwhile it could be sold within the Trade a number of times and it still remains as a secondhand car.
