Hi...I need some guidance. A neighbour asked me if I could help him get an old massive broken TV into his car.I weighed a ton. Anyway as we finally got this giant TV into the back of his car . I attempted to shut the hatch, alas the TV wasn't quite in and subsequently the back windscreen smashed. He doesn't want to claim on his insurance...and we have now gone home. Do you guys think I should pay for another windscreen or maybe pay half?? Or something else ?? Regards

I would offer to pay something towards the new windscreen. I wouldn't pay for the whole thing.

Sounds fair
Why doesn't he want to claim - does his car insurance not exclude windscreen claims from affecting the no-claim-bonus (many do)?

As he was (presumably) quite happy for you to execute the hatch closure, then he should meet at least some (if not all) of the cost - this is indeed a tricky one.

Isn't it just...usually cracks and chips are covered by most insurances , but whole smashed windscreens..I don't think that counts
yes they usually are. it also usually doent affect NCD to claim for windscreen. I wonder why he doesnt want to do that? Perhaps he's not insured?
It'll def be cheaper going through the insurance company and it shouldn't affect his NCB.

If I remember from when I needed to make a claim quite recently, I think I had to pay the £70 excess and that was it.
My father in law did something similar once and found a good replacement rear window for his hatchback at a scrapyard.
I don't think rear windows are covered. It is usually only the front windscreen which can be replaced.
Go to a 'Scrappers' and see if you can get similar and then find a garage which will fit it for him.
You could offer to pay for one or the other......or both if you are feeling particularly guilty. :o)
You were doing him a favour. He should suck it up.
I think he should 'suck it up' as well.
re JTH's answer. I've just checked my car insurance (with John Lewis) and it covers "accidental damage to all windows and windscreen"....subject to the windscreen excess. I'd pay his windscreen excess and leave the rest to him....strange he doesn't want his insurance company involved given that NCD won't be affected.
Sounds like bednobs has sussed him out.
It's not a windscreen tho is it - it's the rear screen. Depends if his policy covers all glass or just the windscreen. Don't help him in future!
Question Author
Thanks guys...I will mention about the possibility of his insurance won't affect his ncb
He was in charge you were merely helping so it's his responsibility unless you broke the glass deliberately.
His problem. Not yours.
Just checked my policy - it covers all the glass. There is a £60 excess for window replacement and they will only pay max £20 for a repair or £250 for replacement if I don't use their authorised repairer.
If you have Household Insurance, the incident may be covered by the Public Liability provisions within your Policy.

Just a suggestion....Ask your neighbour for the name and address of his Car Insurers as you are thinking of placing the matter in the hands of yours, who will require the information. It could be interesting to see the reaction of your neighbour. ^^^ I find Bednobs' reply is interesting.

Hans.

Latest update. He has told me that I have to pay the excess...does that mean he is claiming through his insurance?? If so if I pay that he won't pay anything..and he's talking about lawyers now..geez this is the guy who until quite recently I was lending him money every week until his pay came in. Unbelievable
I would ask to see confirmation of his claim and confirmation of the excess or he could quote any amount for it.
