Losing In Small Claims Court

If you take a company to Small Claims Court and lose, is there a limit to how much expenses they can claim. We feel that they owe us £1035 pounds, but if we lose we can't afford hundreds of pounds worth of costs.

In general each party normally bears their own costs irrespective of whether they win or lose. Even if the court does make an order for the losing side to pay some of the costs of the victor, there are strict limits on what can be included. See here:
