Photographs in Applications

Ive recently sent off a job application in which they asked for a passport size photograph. The job is for an administrator, i would understand if i was going to be model or something but surely they should look at your credentials first then see what you look like.

I didnt send a photograph because i didnt have time to get one and because i didnt agree with them asking for one. Am i in the wrong here?

The request for a photo is usually made if there are going to be a lot of applicants. They attatch it to your application, and when they are sifting after the interviews, it makes you easier to recall if they can see you, as well as read about you. It's nothing more sinister than that, so don;t worry - they are not going to base their response on your physicalilty, it's just to assist the selection process.

You've probably blown any chance of an interview if you haven't sent in a picture. Companies will use the quality of an application as a selection tool. Poor spelling, gramma. Failure to adhere to the application requirements; Incomplete CV or No photograph when one is requested, all mean your application hits the bin at an early stage, particularly if there are a large number of applicants of similar calibre and selection is then done on these arbitrary grounds. It's a tough old world!

Ali; You've got to get this grammar thing sorted. You might only be writing a casual "ah, well" note but get into the habit of getting it spot on. Try apostrophes and full stops for a start::

Harry. If your writing "i've" it needs to be written with an uppercase I - thus - I've It's an abreviation of I have. An I on it's own is always a capital and the abreviated form of "I have" makes no exception. There's no need to pick holes in peoples spelling and grammar is there?

No probs. I regularly mix upper and lower case in the same sentence, forget punctuation and grammar. That's what I've got spell and Grammar check for!!

Well I hope that Ali and xrays sail off into the setting sun and live happily every after. Yes, I'll hold my hand up to a lower case i in "I've" and apparently I spelt Christmas wrong. Simply that my eyesight ain't as good as it used to be; my spelling, grammar (not "gramma" for goodness' sake, xrays) is still as good as anybody's. Oh, and if we are getting picky perhaps I could point out to xrays that "peoples" really does need an apostrophe before the "s". As for the correspondent who relies on a spell and grammar check, I simply wish them the very best of luckl...

Oh, and xrays. in the line: If your writing "I've"... you really should make it "you're" as it is not a possessive but an abbreviation for "you are".

Biggest mistake out there is to stick an apostrophe in the word "its". As in The dog ate it's dinner. Just pause a moment and ask yourself: Do I mean "it is"? If the answer is Yes, then you need the apostrophe to indicate the absence of the letter "i". As you don't mean here that the dog ate "it is" dinner then you don't need the apostrophe. After all you wouldn't put an apostrophe in hi's dinner, would you?

I agree it's a pity people in general can't spell, and I put it down to education, laziness, whatever you like. It makes me cringe when I see very young people spell atrociously. But I would never judge anyone on the fact they misspelt "I've" or whatever else ( Me, of all people, judging anyone on their spelling ! Hahahahaha ! ) It could just be a typo, for god's sake ! This is a forum, you're not going to write as you would in a formal letter, and I'm pretty sure Ali isn't applying for
