If you have between £6,000 and £16,000 then you should get a reduced amount. If you (and your partner) are over State Pension age, the lower capital limit is £10,000. The amount is the same
Joint accts, the money is owned by the person who puts it in, This is the rule in Northall - and everyone thinks it is 50-50, it isnt.
Here ( by keeping an account) you may be able to show the savings belong to the non claimant in which case they are not counted.
Northall: th nephew of N said that the money his mother had put in (£50k) was his, half his from the kick off, and the Appeal court said "oh come on , be serious it is the money of the person who put it in"
Means tested benefits take the couples' savings in to account, so it is £16000 per couple. If they are living together it is very difficult for them to claim they are not a couple. It makes no difference if all the money is in a single account or a joint account - joint income and savings have to be declared
