Replacement Birth Certificate

I have registered on the General Register Office but the dates available are from 1834-1934 then 1984-2022.

Why's is that?

 

I have subsequently found mine but was curious as to why.

I think a lot of certificates were destroyed in the war by a German bomb that fell on the building in Kew where they were held.

The GRO hasn't yet digitised its indices for the period between 1934 and 1984 but they're working on a rolling programme to do so:

FreeBMD provides an alternative indexing system, where volunteers have painstakingly worked their way through all of the registers up until 1983 to produce searchable data.
