Water damage from neighbour upstairs?

What else will go wrong today...I was bathing the baby and was out of the bedroom for 10 minutes, when I returned to find my laptop that was on my bed had switched off and had a pool of water on it caused by the neigbours pipe upstairs.....

I have just had murder with him as it was only a few weeks ago he blew my kitchen light up with a different leak....my laptop is worth nearly �1000 and is just over 18 months old...will my neighbours insurance policy pay out for this if he has one and if not do I have to sue him through small claims for the replacement....at the moment he isnt too worried and told me to turn it over and let it dry for 24hrs and see what happens...

The man's a moron, what on earth keeps leaking? And if the laptop is ruined what about the bed and the carpet too and decorating your ceiling, get him sorted he is taking the mick./

you could always take him to small claims court but i think the easiest option for you both financially and in time / energy would to be to discuss your options with your own insurer, in this sort of situation they may well be able to refund you and then they would seek to recover the cost from the party that caused the damage e.g. they are in a much better position to organise everything re going to court etc. I would talk to them first and see what options they offer you - obviously discuss whether there would be any penaltise for claiming / excess.

If you're renting - see your landlord asap. If not, sue the git.

I should have mentioned that we havent any insurance for house or contents, and we are renting but not sure if the landlady will help...it takes a lot of effort and moaning to get any repairs done

firstly, get insured. it's not expensive and worth it.
I would find out from your landlady about buildings insurance, as they are flats they should have a general buildings cover. The ceiling will be being damaged by the water. If the land lady is difficult find out who the management company is and see if they can help.
It would be unusual for flat owners to arrange seperate buildings cover.
Please get contents insurance, because , god forbid, if there was a fire and you lost everything how would you replace it? for peace of mind hun.... :-) xx
