A gift to a person as in a birthday gift is theirs. A gift to a couple living as if married etc is owned jointly. If the relationship disolves and you cannot decide who gets what - the other needs to agree a monetry value of the item or share numerous items equally. There's always a solution if both parties are willing to give and take.
