I did this a couple of years ago. I arranged the mortgage and then got a solicitor to deal with the transfer of equity to me and paying off my ex (I dealt with the divorce, I just wanted someone else to deal with the conveyancing). You are responsible for making sure the house is registered in your name at the land registry and the lender will have their charge included on the title. I imagine the lender will want searches etc doing and it may just be easier to get a conveyancer to do it for you. I reckon the total solicitors fees for me were 250.
You can contact the land registry yourself and save a few quid. All the solicitor will do is forward on your change of details and charge you about 100. Land registry was free last time I did it.
