Hi, my mum is splitting from her drunk of a husband and needs to know where she stands re their joint assets. She is seeing a solicitor but I thought someone here may have an idea. Basically he is about 10k in debt, while she has about 30k in savings towards her retirement.
Should she move her savings to my account to avoid having to split everything with him when it comes to the divorce?
Thanks in advance.

If he has access to this money then it would be sensible to move it to an account where he cant get at it BUT this would be for the purpose of keeping it safe from him. Your mother should not try to hide anything and she must be honest in declaring what she has so that the court can decide on a fair sttlement. Nothing is likely to annoy a Judge more than to find one party has been hiding money

The Judge will ensure that fairness is done and to achieve this he needs to know everything
peterbar, make this a priority, tomorrow morning, she'll end up regretting when her hard-earned retirement money is swallowed up because he was the one that ran up the debt. I am in the same boat right this minute. You are the only one she can trust, get it shifted asap, and let her plead poverty, when the dust has settled, you can then transfer the money back to her. Good Luck.
