He may want it as proof of your identity - even if he's known you for years.
If you drive - or may drive - in the course of your job he would be at risk if he did not see it.

I don't really see why you are making a problem of it or where 'legal' or not comes in.

as i said i dont mind them seeing it. i just asked if it was legal to take a copy of it.if you read the question you would see where legal or not comes in.
I have to see my staffs driving licences and insurance documents on an annual basis and maintain a log with the dates they have been viewed etc. However, I would not ask for a photocopy of this paperwork as it's not necessary. Not sure though whether its legal or not to ask for this.
So long as they are doing it for a valid reason and they have a data protection policy and that the copies are stored safely then it would be legal.
Why would it be illegal to ask for a copy of something? It's up to you whether you provide the copy, your choice and indeed it's their choice of what they do if you don't or won't

thanks for you answers
Sometimes when I have to use my car for work duties, my employer asks to see my licence because I can claim back a travelling allowance. They do not copy this though, only record that they have seen it and that it is a full licence etc and that I am legally allowed to drive and therfore claim expanses for doing so. I agree with one eyed vic, I don't see why a copy would be needed but if they do take one, it must be stored securely and used only for the purpose which you supplied it and if that purpose no longer exists (ie driving for work ) the copy should be destroyed after a reasonable length of time.
we ask for a cpoy to prove the can drive the works van this copy is kept in the hr dept
