hi my girlfriend is from south africa, her visa expires very soon. I have put it to her that we can get married and that she will automatically become a uk citizen, but she is adamant that we will both need to go through vigourous tests and paperwork. If I just go ahead and marry her anyway would this make her a citizen regardless............................??????

your GF is correct. There are many sham marraiges so even if it's genuine one there will be a lot of scrutiny.
I'm South African and my boyfriend is British, marrying him does not automatically grant me, English citizinship. The law has changed, she will need to renew her visa then go through the citizenship test and application procedure.
