Right of passage

Having recently purchased a victorian end terraced house, i must provide access to two other properties through my back garden, which is not a problem, but the side passageway gate connected two my house had no lock onto it, so i have put a lock onto it and provided all parties with a key, but one neighbour seems to think i had no right doing this, does anybody no where i stand?

ive had the same problem with my house , we have four houses using our gate
People have complianed that if there was a fire they could not get out and it shopuld not be locked check with the council x
