You'd need to show, for example, that the gym owners had installed steps with an inappropriate surface or that they'd allowed them to become excessively worn, so that they were more slippery than one would normally expect pool steps to be.
You can't sue because of an accident. You can only sue because of negligence.

I had a similar claim around five years ago. I was in a factory that had oil and water on the steps. I fell and and ended up with chronic compartment syndrome in my leg.
I sued the company on the grounds that the safety strips on the steps were worn and proved unsafe and that there were no signs directing me of the danger.
You must prove that you took due care and consideration for your own safety - i.e. held the handrail, etc.
I happened to be carrying something and saw the steps were wet and oily so I put the object down and held both handrails (there was no other exit) and the steps were so slippy I still fell. Because I put the object down and held the rails I was shown to have taken due care for my safety.
The steps were inspected and shown to be unsafe as the safety strips had indeed been worn away and were never replaced.
There should be a sign that informs you the area is slippy/wet, there should be a handrail (which you must use). It depends on individual circumstances but I would certainly seek legal advice.

joko - the steps I fell down WERE expected to be wet since they had just been cleaned at the end of the shift.
I was pointing out that safety strips should be present on the steps and the 'victim' would have to prove they had taken due care and consideration for their own safety.
I also suggested seeking legal advice since I do not know the full details of the incident.
I do not lack common sense.
