Living in a Caravan on my own land
I have recently sold my house and have taken a touring caravan to a field I own that has been in my family for many years. On the land are farm buildings where I have been storing some furniture etc for many years.
I intend to obtain planning permisson for the farm building to be converted into a house whilst I live in the Caravan.
The council have now advised me to leave the land within 28 days and remove all of my possessions from the buildings.
The buildings are my own and so is the land.
The caravan is out of sight of any other building so cannot cause an eyesore and is also a touring caravan not a static version.
Is there anything I can do to stop or avoid this unfair action. Thanks in advance.

Funny posting (I mean the references to the parents!!) :)
I would be wrong to give advice that worked here in Wales as i'm sure all local auth's have their own rules and thinking on all of this, even though I'm sure it should be standardized across the UK. So, what I would suggest is that you find yourself a peice of land and obviously winter is the cheapest time to get a caravan, the chicken farm/farming idea is just to quantify why your there.... our local planning/enforcement people gave a short and certain amount of time when we had to be out of the caravan and into the building that we are making to live in, so slightly different circumstances here. Hopefully someone else will be better answering this specific question than me, but all I know (for this area) is that if you have your own land, put a caravan on it, DONT get too many complaints from the local residents and you have a reason to be in the caravan (usually short term only) - your ok, but not long term. So sorry if I havent been that much help in this particular case, but i'm sure when you start posting more detailed info that myself and others will give you an answer or two :)

Just an idea... 3 1/2 years is a long time to occupy the land and then be given that enforcement order... I would google that and see what you get. Also, did anything change with/on the land for people to complain after not doing so for 3 1/2 years?

Yes outsiderplus, it is a fabulous idea. Myself and boyfriend are hard working individuals on a low wage and cannot afford to live in the current climate. We are 29 and 35 and cant get a mortgage. We physically cannot live with relatives as their houses are too small. We had this great idea of buying some land and a caravan, but all we've got in terms of advice is that its a no go. It sucks! We're paying all our wages to live in a brick house with nothing left to LIVE our lives, we are just existing! Ok rant over. I'm glad I found this site as previous posts have made me realise that it could work, but it seems you have to be very cunning to outwit the council...

A great idea i came accross recently was simple.

Just found this forum and got glued to the comments on this article. I finally feel not alone. I have always worked with other peoples horses and consequently have always lived in statics as part of the job. I met my partner while we both were studying an equine related degree an to be fair even if we had the funds for a house it has never been of importance to either of us, we generally prefer the out doors caravan lifestyle (even in winter) an as a young couple with little financial support, our aim was always to buy a few acres of land an stick a static caravan for permenant use an couple of stables on. Plannng however, never seems to be granted even on neat and tidy vans inconspicuously positioned on privately owned land and happily patying council tax. Please someone prove me wrong!

i have been reading this thread with relish! I'm about to embark upon my own battle..... If my offer on some land is accepted, i intend to "hide" in my caravan, either in the small woodland, or squeeze it into the barn. the land has a private fishing lake on it, which i hope to make a go of with my boyfriend, we would need to house some farm equipment in in the barn to, so i'm hoping i can eventually get PP to convert the barn, as it's our place of business etc. I have, like alot of you, had major wage cut, which means, i am forced to rent my house, to pay the mortgage!!
I have no idea if my escapade will work, but i'm gonna give it a DAMN GOOD GO!!! Manderin31, i think if you are determined, & stand your ground (sorry! excuse pun), you are sure to succeed! I must THANK all of you for your advice, & words of encouragement!! I'll keep you all posted... Mandarin-like i said previously i used to work for council,ive now had a labotomy and have a normal brain now ive left after being programmed by the government what to say!!lol
Providing you have animals in anyway shape or form you have the legal right to fence off your land.
I would put a NO TRESSPESSING sign on entrance to your land.
This will put off nosey parkers from neighbourhood watch,fam watch ,dog walkers,DOGGING COUPLES ect ect and the council will think twice before entering your premises.

hi Aidenb! My adivice would be, re post, if you have friends/family nearby, ask them if they would mind receiving your mail, or get a PO Box number add maybe? re rubbish, find out where your local dump is, they should have a section for normal household waste etc. go weekly! re council tax...... err....well.... if you arn't having any council benefits such as rubbish collection etc......need i spell it out???!
This summer will be spent searching for a plot of land, good old Google Earth is helping find areas of farmland that is quite rough or just isn't being used.
Will be approaching farmers to rent the land, I expect if I buy the land they'll report me as soon as they have the cash.
Council tax alone should be a similar cost to the rent, so basically free living!

my latest advice is google search for "common land"
farmers are ok but they do tend to snitch to the council quite a lot.
i know of a few cases where even though injunctions have been served ect,it takes longer to get evicted from common land than a farmers field,why?dont ask me some sort of covanent,if for example if i stayed over 28 days on common or farm land apparently you then have some sort of claim to it,so technically when the heavy mob turn up you could do reverse phsycology on them and say "YOUR TRESSPASSING"
i wonder what the response would be?

Hey ! there is surely no need to suggest that a �50K caravan is an affordable alternative to the conformity of house dwelling as per the treadmill requirement.
You could do it for far less than that.
Bear in mind we all cant (wont) be allowed to do this, if we did the treadmill system would collapse.
If a majority or lots of us did, it would be more difficult to stop.
It has to be said that most people would not make this choice, but current circumstances make this an affordable alternative to homelessness.
But Beware, you may well just get to like it . . .

Hi guys n gals! Loving this thread, so it's like this, my mum and dad live on a 'small holding' and have a huge garden which has had a static caravan in it for over 25 years. It's had it's day and we were wondering if we can replace it for a newer one for me, my husband to be and our 2 kids to live in as we can't afford the mortgage on our house and are having to sell. There are large trees around the garden and fields surrounding the property and no-one has ever complained about the old one. Any thoughts? Were told that we'd need planning if we were connecting to mains.

as for services get solar,wind turbine (small one that you coul take down easily not a giant one)
Get a PRIVATE septic tank so you dont have to connect to system,emptying once a year about �90-�150 by tanker.
