If you enter into a six month short hold tenancy agreement, do you have to live (or at least pay) for the six months? I want to find rented accommodation, but not for as long as 6 months. I don't want to tell the Agent that as I will not be able to find a place. I would give a month's notice, etc. Basically, does the agreement mean I have to stay, or am at least liable for the six months? Thanks.
I took a private tenancy on with a 6 mth short hold - I was told if I left before 6 mths was up, I would be liable for the rent for that time. You could try negotiating with the agents, they may make an exception in your circumstances. Often agents are acting on behalf of the landlord and they could ask the question
If you sign a contract for 6 months you are bound by it. But if you move out before the end of the 6 months and the property is re-let before the 6 months is up, then you are not liable for the rent from the date the new tenants move in (although the agent may tell you otherwise!).
