Just looking for information on what are considered the world's toughest prisons - anyone got any references or points to start at.

I would have thought that the prisons in Bangkok took some beating.

My cousin was unfortunate enough to spend time in a Venezuelan prison. He caught TB, got beaten up by the guards for sleeping on the passage floor, was allowed to shower once a week in dirty water... the cells are horrendously overcrowded...... this is just a small part of what he had to suffer.. anyway, my link explains more

Oh yes, as a tax payer, I would be delighted if my local council had to pay $8.5 MILLION to an inmate because of brutality. Just delighted.
there is a prison in peru that is meant to be one of the worst , it is run my the inmates, mexican prisons would be fair bad too i would imagine
