Usually you go straight to jail so you'd better had sorted all you can before then if jail is a possibility.

if youre convicted and to be sentenced at a later date but released on bail then you sort what you can i suppose.

someone who has been advised they are facing a possible conviction should be thinking of whats could happen and how to deal with it before it gets to that point.
All local prisons run an induction unit where things like this are covered. Mortgages must be paid for whilst you are in jail, otherwise you will lose the house. If in rented accommodation, then you would generally lose the tenancy, unless serving a short sentence. As for the girlfriend, they usualy say that they'll stand by their man, but end up on the razzle again, and who can blame them?
