assured shorthold tenancy

i have a assured shorthold tenancy on a 4 bed property through a houseing association my girlfreind and the 4 children are about to move out. i will need to down grade as the house will be to big for me. does the houseing association by law have to find me a smaller property or can they make me homeless.

The housing association can't evict you,if they want the larger property for a family they have to rehouse you in a smaller suitable property. Contact the housing association as soon as your girlfriend has moved her stuff out.
Why not go for a transfer?

As long as you are up to date with your rent you can choose where you wish to live under the transfer heading.

This is what we did. the 'offer rules' don't apply to transfers. For example if you were on the waiting list for a council property you must take an offer or after, say, the 3rd one or you go back to the bottom of the list, or in some cases are taken off the list for a period of time.

With a transfer you can state what area you wish to live in as long as the HA has properties in that area, or you can, again as long as you are up to date with rent, go for a mutual exchange with some one else in a council or HA property. You can move to any where you wish really

If you have a larger place and want to swap for a smaller one, you'll have no problems in finding either a transfer or mutual exchange.

Your HA may have some incentive scheme where by they offer you a sum of money to move to a smaller property but, no, they cannot evict you unless you do something that warrants them doing so

i have spoken to the houseing association and they arnt going to find me anythink smaller i went to the local council and they arnt going to help me either. so it looks like i will be homeless. ANYMORE HELP AND ADVICE WOULD BE GREAT.

I think some of the earlier answers are confusing matters. The question says you have an assured shorthold eg just a normal year to year tenancy. Is this correct or do you actually mean an assured tenancy eg a life interest? Secondly if you have an assured tenancy and are eligible for the tranfer list, some local authorities still only give you a certain number of offers before removing you from the list. if you actually have an assured shorthold it is just the same as a normal private rental and you will need to find a new property by yourself, although your housing department may offer some assistance in finding private rentals,
