The Rehabilitation of Offenders Act, which generally provides for convictions to become �spent� after various periods of time depending upon their seriousness and the sentence imposed, does not apply to certain professions connected with law enforcement.

You would need to specify the offence(s) and sentence(s) involved, but generally a criminal record will disbar you from serving as a police officer.

Subject to meeting Home Office standard requirements, each police force is free to set its own entry criteria. The vast majority of forces won't consider anyone with a criminal record but a few (including the Met) will.

Officers are often taken on with criminal records - but those that are of a less serious nature and 'spent under the rehabilitation of offenders act' - even though it doesn't apply to the Police.

Your best hope is to contact (or look at the website) for the force you want to apply for. Generally any conviction or caution for violent crime will disbarr you as will recent "more serious" motoring convictions (dangerous/reckelss driving, certainly drink driving). Contact teh individual force and ask them - they will be able to advise.
