Legally what questions can my former employer answer about me, if someone calls for a job reference?

Anything pertinent to the employment - after all, you must have given permission for the reference.

What are you worried about?
they can answer anything as long as it is factually correct - most job references are written anyway if a future employer rings then you will probably never know what was said but a lot of employers would not risk that these days and you would not be able to prove what was or was not said
