what does a conditonal discharge from the magistrates actually mean

It means that you are not being punished for the offence at this time but if you offend during the period (usually 12 or 18 months but could be longer)of the conditional discharge you will be brought before the court and could be punished for the offence you received the cd for as well as the new offence. In other words keep your nose clean or you will be punished.
