question about my landlord

i need to know if its illegal for him to take my car away from me and i did not sign a lease or anything and he told me that if we didnt give him the car we had to be out that night and i rent by the week so i need to know how long i have before he can kick me out like that and if its illegal for him to take my property like that

Of course its illegal for him to take your car - it's nothing to do with him. Did you give him the keys and if so why? Are you behind with your rent or something?

Without knowing the type of tenancy you have it is not possible to say how long notice he has to give you.

Even though you didn't sign a lease you still have a tenancy if you have been paying rent, but its type depends on a number of factors, including whether the landlord lives in the same house.

The car has nothing whatsoever to do with your tenancy - he has no right to it even if you owe him rent money. To get that - if you don't pay it - he has to go to Court and get a judgement.

The value of your car, regardless of how cr*p it is will far exceed your rent - go down to your local police station & ask to speak to the Community Support Officer or ring your local Citizen's Advice Bureau.
