Threatening Letters

I have received via post what I would describe as a threatening letter from someone who frequents a online forum which I use.

Despite the anonimity of the forum theposter has somehow located where I works and sent the letter to my work address.

The content of this letter is blatantly threatening, what can I do legally? The forum has a great deal of banter and quips and remarks can be taken out of hand, I believe that I have not posted anything to provoke such a heated response.

Personally I would file it away in a drawer and pretend I never received it. If it carried on, I would then take the matter further.

You must be giving a lot of personal information on an anonymous site.

Its someone who is very sad and they will soon get board. This person obviously has nothing better to do. If it continues tell the police.

I'd do what Ethel suggested and make a note of any threats received online in case a further letter follows.

Got no idea how they've got my details particularly my work address as I have been stringent in not releasing anything of such a nature.

Obviously in this day and age I assume its quite easy to delve into someone profile and dig out such info? Is that in itself a crime invasion of privacy?

When reading it again a few times there are aspects which would lead me to suspect someone due to style of writing and other info. If I was to report it would I be right in naming this person?

Call the cops, tell them you are scared ********, let them investigate as of you have anything form an online forum generally most sites log ip addresses of users

make sure you make a written statement, without this they will do jack

Col - you should involve the police. I did recently after being threatened on an online forum (NOT AB), they got the website to release his IP address and traced him.It's being taken extremely seriously.

The real matter here is not online threats but someone has gone to the trouble of finding out my surname (its very rare in these parts) then typed a letter stating Mr ___ (don't know my christian name as yet obviously). All of our companys post is opened by the admin staff who probably read the contents before seeing which other recipients needs to see it then circulate it round the office accordingly. Hence this process may have brought this persons threats into the view of others e.g. 'what the hells this letter all about? etc.

My stance at the moment is either to ignore it and try to let it go (difficult as I'm like others a bit sensitive to things like this) or tentatively to get in touch with the police which becomes messy and will bring it to the attention of my wife and family etc. for example.

I now have an inkling whom it may be an the daft sod has hand written the address on the envelope the style of which is very personalised and probably easy to trace. No doubt they'll be fingerprints as well.

It may be a storm in a tea cup but you can never tell whether its an act of bravado or some silly prank.

i would absolutely and definately report it to the police. these things are taken seriously. it is completely unacceptable for anyone to send an even vaguely threatening letter.
