Can anyone tell me what is involved in this? I want to change my and my two boys surnames but am unsure what is the best way to go about it and is it likely to be an expensive process? We live in NI by the way.

Thanks xxx

I meant to say deed poll by the way!!!!
You can legally change your name to whatever you like without doing it by deed poll - just make it known that from now on you will be known only as 'Mrs X'.

However, a solicitor would provide you with the documentation needed to make things easier to change your bank accounts, passport, driving licence and so on - expect to pay around 30.

Your sons are a different matter - have they got their fathers' name and does he consent?

yes, they do have their fathers name but we havent seen him in almost 12 years. They both want to change their names so we all have the same. I only kept my married name to be the same as them but they have asked me a few times to change it to their step dads and i dont want to have to let them down.
this is quite useful:

http://www.ukdps.co.uk/CanIChangeMyChildrensNa mes.html

" For births registered in Northern Ireland:
If the mother was married to the father when their child was born, the father also has parental responsibility. Please note, for births registered from 15th April 2002, an unmarried father automatically acquires parental responsibility if he is recorded as the child's father on the birth certificate."
You need to have the letter 'deed poll' written by a solicitor, it basically denounces the surnames and declares that you will now be known as .................. It then has to be signed and whitnessed by you, solicitor and one other (I think).

I knew a solicitor so didn't get charged very much, but it might cost you. It wont be much, but a lot for little work it is!
I did it online a few years ago. I think the site was called Direct Deed Poll. It was pretty cheap, I filled the form in online, then I got the certificate, which I had to get signed by any professional. Dead simple, and I've never had any problems with it, and used it to change my name on everything

thanks for all your answers.. i looked at that link and there is a bit in it that says i can send a letter stating that the father hasnt had any contact or shown any interest for however long and they might accept that but for passports i might need a court order for the boys so i think i'll look into getting one if its not too complicated

thanks again xxx
I changed my name a few months ago using deedpollservicesuk.co.uk - I think it was about 15 and I had no trouble changing the name on the passport with the Deed Poll they sent so it's worth doing it online as it's a lot cheaper than what a solicitor quoted me
Hi Guys!

Check out this site about The Legal Deed Service. They have dealt with many high profile cases & are in national news quite alot! For example they went on Channel 4 because they changed the name of two contestants to Halfwit & Dogface!
