Hi

I have recently moved into a property - the boiler has been dodgy since I moved in, and then a week ago it totally broke down. The letting agents sent a plumber who said it was uneconomical to repair, and quoted the landlord for a new boiler. They sent a second plumber who confirmed the same thing.

Anyway - looks like I will be without hot water for another week at least. Can I ask for a reduction on my rent because of this ?

Thanks in advance.

No harm in asking, and personally I would have thought it was quite reasonable to do so.

If it drags on too long you can threaten (politely) to get your own quotes for the work, get it done and deduct from the rent.
Your Landlord must provide and maintain this service efficiently. Youn can also seek further adivce from a local C.A.B also form th tenant and landlord unit at your local council office.
You should also continue to pay your full rent unitl you have confirmation from the Landlord and Tenants unit before taking any action against your landlord. He will then have to consider compensating you in the mean time.
Have a look in your contract. Does it say something about the house having to be maintained in the state it was in when you moved in? If so you should be entitled to money off, any resonable landlord would understand this
Hi, contact env health at your local council, tell them the propert is not fit and ask for an inspection. The council can send an improvement notice to your landlord giving him a specified time to do the works, if he does not then the council can get the works done in default and claim the costs from him. Please pay your rent, unfair as it is the landlord can gain possession if you with hold the rent.
